Background

The idea for this project stems from ...
  1. the new challenges in the digital and media world due to the increased demands for teachers and students’ digital skills, information overload, fake news, disinformation, etc.,
  2. the need for flexible digital ways of education and communication highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic and been a European priority, which, however, is not addressed by either the formal or informal school curriculum, and,
  3. the growing environmental issues such as the waste of natural resources, air pollution, climate change, etc., which are basically social and require the solutions and interventions of ordinary citizens, even at the school level.


Objectives

The project aims at …

  1. the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices that characterize a "Sustainable School", which incorporates the principles of Sustainability in all its functions (e.g. administration, teaching and learning, resource management, transportation to and from school, the relations of the institution not only with its community, but also with a wider one, etc.), and,
  2. the acquisition of knowledge, digital and communication skills as well as the development of critical thinking which is essential when using modern means of communication (Media Literacy) and navigating the Internet through raising awareness about issues such as the responsibilities of a digital citizen, the protection of personal data, online disinformation, fake news, harmful content, digital copyrights, cyberbullying, scams, etc.,
  3. promoting democratic active participation and networking.


Participants

Members of the Pedagogical Team are students aged between 15 and 17.


Methodology

The method used is Project Based Learning. A student-centered process is followed, encouraging student initiative, using participatory and active teaching techniques, and utilizing methods such as discussion, research, and the organization of discourse based on the use of arguments. In addition, cooperative learning that encourages the active participation and interaction of the members of the groups as well as experiential learning by making use of research procedures are enhanced. Finally, there is an interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approach to the issues, the creative and critical ability is developed and the right of the members of the pedagogical team to free expression is ensured.


Expected results

Through the provision of learning opportunities, the implementation of this project will …
  1. contribute to the digital transformation and green transition of the school,
  2. improve the quality of teaching and learning in school education,
  3. promote the values of diversity, inclusion, and democratic participation;
  4. strengthen the European dimension of the school,
  5. empower teachers and support their professional development,
  6. empower students with fewer opportunities,
  7. encourage students’ active participation in decision-making centers at local level and representation in institutions,
  8. discourage school dropouts, school bullying, and social exclusion,
  9. develop students' critical, systemic and creative thinking, empathy and meaningful interaction, and,
  10. develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships.
